We are just going to review all of the install from the last four days tomorrow. Practice will be a little shorter than usual, that's if we can get through each phase without too much explanation and more actual practice. It looks like I will be making a few minor changes to the offensive playbook, but nothing that is going to make your head spin. I'll simply be adding the adjustments we have made to certain plays in order for you to have a precise source of reference when you are studying your playbook.
A few things that need to be addressed for tomorrow:
- 90's Protection: Full Backs/H's - From now on, if we are in a Pro Formation, and we check a 90's pass play, such as "Check, Check, 1, 90 Dancer . . . 1, 90 Dancer!" You must sprint to your flush alignment and run whatever 90's play was called. In this case you would line up and run Dancer. The offensive line, TE, and Tailback will run a 50 or 51 Protection to whatever side the TE is in. So, if we were lined up in Pro Rt., then you would line up to the Left, and the O-Line would run a 50 Protection with the TE staying in to block the DE. The Tackle to the TE side would simply spy the Sam LB, now that the DE is taken care of by the TE.
- 50/51: Slight change; nothing too big. In 50/51 we will always check the protection to the TE side. If it is Pro Rt. we will check 50 Protection. 50/51 means nothing to the Tackles because you will always have the DE to their side. Example: Andrew will always block the Left DE and Trevor will always block the Right DE. All of the same rules apply to the Guards and Center. Example: 50 Protection - Bobby steps hard right to block DT in the 3 Tech.; Wehbe steps hard with Left foot and left hand to help Collison, but spy's Mike LB to his right; Collison steps hard right to take over 1 Tech lined up on Wehbe's left shoulder. Tailback will no longer have the option to run a pass route. The Tailback will always block the LB lined up between the Guard and tackle away from the 50/51 call. Example: 50 Protection - Tailback looks to block LB between Left Guard and Left Tackle. The Fullback/H will run whatever pass route he is designated to run unless he hears a 60/61 Call. If the tailback or Tackle to strength reads BLITZ, they will make a 60 or 61 Call. This just means that the Fullback has to CHECK FOR BLITZ FIRST before he runs his route. It must be a good 1001 count, while stepping hard unto the line of scrimmage before he releases. Nothing else changes for the O-Line and Tailback. Example: Pro Right 60 Protection - TE releases into route; Trevor blocks Right DE; Fullback steps into L.O.S. and spy's LB, if he doesn't blitz - releases into route; Bobby steps right and blocks 3 Tech.; Wehbe steps hard up-field with left foot and left hand first to help Collison, but still spy's LB to his right; Collison takes over Wehbe's 1 Tech to the right, Tailback steps up hard into L.O.S. between Left Guard and Left Tackle and spy's LB, Andrew blocks Left DE.
Hopefully this clarifies any confusion from today. Don't hesitate to ask any questions about the pass protections and how they are supposed to be run. We will have diagrams at practice tomorrow that your position coaches will go over as well.
