Parent Night

Parents and Players,

We will be having our Parent Night, this Friday September 24th at 6:15 pm. All parents must report to the track no later than 6:00 pm in order for us to get you in the appropriate order for the celebration. I already have a roster typed up with the players and their parents names in order for this year to go by much smoother than last year. We will begin announcing the parents with their player no later than 6:15 pm.

Also, we will be hosting our mother, father, and special person appreciation nights during our last three weeks of the season. Week seven the players will be honoring their mother and presenting their away game jersey. Week eight, the players will be honoring their father and presenting their home game jersey. For week nine, the players will choose someone special in their life to honor. This could be a relative, neighbor, teacher, coach, etc.... I will keep you posted with the times and dates when we get closer to those dates.

Take care,

Week 3 Players of the Week

Parents and Players,

Offense Player of the Week: Jake Duzey
Defensive Player of the Week: AJ King
Special Teams Player of the Week: Bret Kast
Scout O Player of the Week: Micah Safsten
Scout D Player of the Week: Brandon Terry
Big Stick of the Week: Blake Atwell, Lonnie Boldon
Count on Me Player of the Week: Ben Bartnowak

Congratulations to all of our Week 3 Players of the Week! I'd also like to congratulate a young man who has truly risen to the occasion and made himself into an outstanding offensive linemen over the last few weeks. After a tough first week, Joe Colo has quickly made himself into a dominating factor on our offensive line. He, along with Trevor Mason, Jake Collison, Andrew Aurand, Corey Thai, Brandon Wehbe, Brandon Terry, Jon Daniel, Kento Mori, and Donovan Usoro all compete daily to make up our starting five and become the best offensive line in the conference. I feel that all of the "Big Sexies" have experienced a much deserved wake-up call over the last two weeks; and Joe - the youngest in terms of Varsity experience - along with the other lineman, are more than willing to step up and become the dominators I know they can be. Great job Joe!!!

I know from a Varsity standpoint these last two weeks have been frustrating. As we continue to evaluate our players both offensively and defensively, it is evident that we are lacking consistency in all aspects of our game. I'm focusing mainly on the consistency in the belief that we are the best team playing football on Friday nights. No matter what the situation may be, or who we are playing; we will end each week victorious. I'm asking for help from all the parents to continuously remind each player of their tremendous abilities, and how blessed they are to be surrounded by such great teammates. It does not matter if we are up by 60 points, or down by 60 points, we must continue to fight to the very end. We must not forget all the hard work these young men have put in to this off-season. Each and every member of this team must continue to stay focused, constantly study their scouting reports, encourage, and challenge their teammates week-in and week-out. If our players can put all these factors together, along with a "never say die" attitude, we will be unstoppable. Clarkston is now behind us. We must look ahead and fully prepare ourselves for total domination against Royal Oak. Take care, and I'll talk to you soon.

Go Red Hawks.

No Excuses Video

This is why championships mean so much in the end. It's too easy to make excuses. Be the reason this football program succeeds!!

Schedule and Roster Updates

Parents and Players,

Just a reminder to the Freshman parents that the game against Clarkston will be at the middle school this Thursday at 4:30. The J.V. team will play at the High School Thursday at 6:30.

Also, next weeks game against Royal Oak has been moved to Wednesday, September 15th. With this change, we need to make an adjustment to the Freshman, and J.V. practice schedule over the weekend. The Freshman and J.V. will have an hour and a half, defensive focused practice from 9:00 am - 10:30 am on Saturday, September 11th. They will have their offensive focused practice on Monday, September13th. Tuesday will be a pre-game walk through; followed by the game on Wednesday. The Freshman and J.V. teams will have a film review session on Thursday. Friday, they will have their 45 minute study table session, followed by a quick 30 minute weight room period. Saturday will be a normal schedule as shown on the attachment. We have slightly adjusted the Freshman and J.V. practice schedule for our normal Saturday practices. By doing this, we can allow more collaboration time for our Varsity Offensive and Defensive staff. The Saturday practices are proving to be extremely worthwhile and effective. I truly appreciate your patience.

Varsity parents! With this change to next weeks schedule, we will need to move our normally scheduled team dinner from 7:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Wednesday, September 15th. Also, a reminder to turn your dinner money in to Patti Aurand. I'll will make sure to keep all of you updated with any further adjustments. We still have a promising season ahead for us all. Let's continue to keep all lines of communication open. I would hate for the frustrations of a few people to overshadow the success that all levels are having so far. Please encourage to challenge these young men to reach their fullest potential both in the classroom and athletic field.

Talk to you soon,

The Saturday practice schedule will remain the same. We will not be having practice until 6:30 in the evening on Monday. Congrats to the 2010 Captains

Parents,

A couple of things. If some of you have not checked out our website - www.troyathensfootball.com - lately, I highly encourage you to do so. If you click on our "Media" link, you will have access to one of our great web options provided by Mary Beth Farnum. Mary Beth does a tremendous job taking action shots for all of Athens athletics, and has done so for the football team as well. Just click the Mary Beth Farnum link, or you can go to: fromthefieldfotos.smugmug.com. There are some great pictures of all the boys from both the picture day and the Red vs. White scrimmage. Thank you Mary Beth for providing all of these young men and their families with such great memories!!

Secondly, I would like to congratulate all of the young men who were selected by their teammates to be captains for the 2010 season. The captains include:

Freshman:
Jake Nelson
Lucas Bezerra
J.V.
Joe Shields
Aaron Hazen
Varsity:
Jake Duzey
A.J. Morey
Christian Conley
Trevor Mason

Each week we will select a Special Forces, Offensive Scout, and Defensive Scout Player of the Week. These honorary captains will help lead stretches throughout the week with the other captains, and will stand hand-in-hand at the hash marks for the coin toss. The state rules only allow us a maximum of four captains at mid-field for the coin toss, but I would still like them to have a role in the opening ceremonies of the game. I am extremely proud of the all the young men who were selected to be captains, and feel that they represent every essence of what we are trying to teach all members of this program both on and off the field.

I would also like to take this time to acknowledge the great supporting cast that our captains - particularly at the varsity level - have with them on this outstanding football team. As we look to them for the ultimate leadership throughout the season, we can't forget about our other outstanding seniors such as Blake Atwell, Durand Street, Tyler Everlove, Micah Safsten, A.J. King, Joe Kemp, Ray Lim, Donovan Usoro, Bedar Noor, Jake Collison, Brandon Wehbe, Luke Winkel, Dan Buia, Dave Mandziara, Kevin Slimak, and Ray Gatie. Coincidentally, both Blake Atwell and Durand Street will be sharing the honor of being named the "Count on Me" player of the week for Week 1. The “Count on Me” player of the week is considered our “Every Man” for that particular week. Meaning, they are acknowledged for their outstanding work on Offense, Defense, Special Forces, and their overall work ethic as well. You will see both of them carry the football flag across the field; leading their team to the promise land right before the start of the game. Both of these young men put in a tremendous off-season, and have rightfully earned this honor.

This team has a tremendous junior presence as well. Our junior class is lead by the one, the only . . . Benjamin Bartnowak. A.K.A "Benny Biceps." His biceps make Coach Divito jealous. Ben is joined by Andrew Aurand, Corey Thai, Joe Colo, Jake Spinek, Matt Fitzpatrick, Chris "I kill for fun" Churay, Ryan Noorman, Brett Kast, Tim Heard, Lonnie Bolden, "Big Tone on the Microphone" Tony Shayoka, Chris Codreanu, Brandon Neal, Josh Allen, Jon Daniel, Ethan Hoffman, Brandon Terry, Connor Gurzell, Kento Mori, Robert Farrug, Antwan Moore, Anthony Moore, and Antonio Mitchell. Last, but certainly not least, we have our lone sophomore . . . Sammy "The Bull" Haskell. A.K.A Sammy Capone.

All of these young men provide us with many different qualities that exemplify what a championship team should consist of when pursuing the goal of becoming the best football team in the state. Needless to say, I'm excited for what the 2010 season has in store for all of the Red Hawk football fans throughout our Athens community.

See you at the games. Go Red Hawks!!!

Help Wanted

Parents,

I need your help. I'm looking for 2-3 people, particularly freshman parents, who are will to help the varsity team with scouting this year. My good friend and scouting coordinator, Don Quest, is unable to do our scouting this year. As you know, this part of high school football is vital to our success. I would provide passes for free entry into each game you would be scouting. I would need one person to film, one person to spot and relay information, and a third to write down particular offensive and defensive tendencies our opponent may display during certain downs and situations. I can't express enough how important this is to our success as a football team. Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I am looking for a parent(s) to help us film as well. If you would like to travel with the team and film are games, this would help us tremendously. I'm also looking for parents to help film the Freshman and J.V. games. With our staff being a little short-handed at the last minute this year, I'm really asking our football parents to step up to the plate. I know this is a lot to ask, but the teaching aspect involved in making these young men better has a lot to do with our film review during the season.

Staff changes and updates:
~Josh Heppner = Head Varsity Football Coach. O-Coordinator
~Mike Divito = Asst. Head Coach. O-Line. Strength & Conditioning
~Jim Fitzpatrick = Varsity D-Coordinator. D-Line
~Neal Mozdzierz = Head J.V. Coach. WR. J.V. O-Coordinator
~Dave Graves = J.V. D-Coordinator. LB's
~Mike Pierce = Freshman Head Coach. DB's. Freshman D-Coordinator
~Steve Mitzel = Running Backs. Freshman O-Coordinator
~Steve Culp = Asst. WR's
~Mike Merz = Asst. D-Line
~Rick Nelson = Asst. DB's

Once we finalize the roster after this weekend. I will be giving you a fan-out sheet for each level. This will simply increase our means of positive communication.

Please let me know by Monday the 16th as to whether you would like to volunteer for filming and scouting this year. If we have enough people willing to take on this task, we can set up a schedule to divide the duties for different games among the volunteers. I'll need to schedule a meeting with you next week in order to go over the expectations for each task.

Thanks again for all your help and support. Go Red Hawks!!

No Lifting for 8-11-10

Parents and Players,

There will not be lifting for Wednesday, August 11th during the 10:00 to 11:30 time periods. We were scheduled for the morning, but we are conducting a 7 station strength training and cardiovascular endurance workout on the field at the end of practice tomorrow. We will be shaving a few minutes off of the main practice times tomorrow to accommodate for the conditioning portion of practice. Therefore, if there is any parent bring dinner to their son for the break, expect to deliver that by 5:00, rather than 5:30.

Talk to you soon,

Friday Recap

Parents and Players,

Just a reminder to print the "Pre-Season Information Letter" to the right of this post under the "Links" section. I just wanted to recap on a few things from Friday's BBQ before we start the season:

1. Communication is key!!!! In terms of our communication regarding some concerns parents may have throughout the season, we will do this the "old school" way. Meaning, our discussions will not be drawn out through multiple emails where the tone and/or message trying to be delivered can be misinterpreted. Rather, if you have a serious concern regarding the program or possible issues with a particular coaching style, all you simply need to do is send me an email stating you would like to set up a meeting with me. I will be more than happy to schedule a meeting where we can meet face-to-face and solve any type of issue in a civilized manner. Sending a long, drawn out email with a condescending tone only sends the wrong message and prolongs the problem solving process. I've truly enjoyed the email exchanges we have had up to this point. All of you have kept me well informed of different vacations, illnesses, etc, etc... Please continue to send me questions or "heads-up" emails we don't necessarily need a face to face discussion in order to get the answers we need.

2. The "24 Hour Rule." If at any point throughout the season, particularly after a game you become frustrated with the lack of playing time your son may be receiving, please do not approach any coach after a game to discuss such matters. Rather, send me an email that you would like to discuss something with me, and are applying the 24 Hour Rule to the discussion. I will then set up a meeting to discuss the issue after 24 hours of receiving the email. Most coaches in the state do not even allow this to happen, but I'd rather make sure all of us are always on the same page.

3. Belonging to this team is a journey of development. I would hate to lose an individual after their freshman year because they did not receive the playing time they felt they deserved. If at any point throughout the season this may happen, I am more than willing to discuss the expectations that we have for each individual in this program, and take a more realistic look at their abilities at that particular point. I will always provide the appropriate guidance to help them become the most successful football player they can become in this program. Remember, it's not how you start, but how you finish that counts the most.

I'm truly looking forward to a great season where all of us feel a part of the great things to come for Troy Athens Football. Your support and dedication to the success of these young men has been incredible. Remember, my door is always open. In order for us to create a true family feel to this program, we must make sure that all of us feel we play a part in the success of all these young men. No matter what happens, please continue to support and encourage every single young man dedicating his time to the success of his teammates.

Take Care and Go Red Hawks!!!!

Schedule for August 2nd - 6th

Parents and Players,

It's hard to believe that we are approaching the last week before the start of the 2010 football season. I'm more than ready to see how all of the hard work these young men have put into this off-season will pay off. Here is the schedule for next week, Monday, August 2nd through Friday the 6th:

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday = 3rd and Final Testing Phase.

Seniors = 9:00 - 9:45
Juniors = 9:45 - 10:30
Sophomores = 10:30 - 11:15
Freshman = 11:15 - 12:00

Please make sure that all of the young men report at the appropriate testing times. Thursday will be our official sign-up day. I have changed the times from the original schedule you received this spring. Each class will report at the following times to receive all of their equipment:

Seniors = 9:00 - 9:45
Juniors = 9:45 - 10:30
Sophomores = 10:30 - 11:15
Freshman = 11:15 - 12:00

Please have your players bring a combination lock with them on Thursday. We will be assigning each player a locker; therefore it is extremely important that each player have a lock in order to safely keep their equipment secure. I will also need a copy of each players physical form turned in to me on Thursday as well. Any player who does not have their physical by the start of 2-A-Days on August 9th will be ineligible to participate. The seniors will be having their senior conditioning practice on Thursday also. This is a tradition held by the seniors each year before the start of 2-A-Days, and has become a great method of team building. All grade levels will participate. Each of the summer captains will relay the place and time for the conditioning session. I will meet with the Seniors for "Dinner with Coach Heppner" at Buffalo Wild Wings at 6:30 on Thursday as well.

All parents will be receiving the rules and in-season expectations at the family BBQ on Friday, August 6th. The BBQ will begin at 6:30 pm in the football stadium. If you have not signed up for a designated dish to pass at the BBQ, please do so by next week and I will forward that information to Patti Aurand. Any player unable to pick up their equipment on Thursday, August 5th must report to my office no later than 11:00 am Monday, August 9th.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call or email.

Go Red Hawks!!

Important Troy Sports Camp Update

Parents and Players,

What a great start to the week! Thank you to all the parents and players that emailed me regarding vacations and sudden emergencies not only for this week, but also throughout the summer as well. Communication is crucial to the success of our young men in this program. I have been very pleased with how well we have been communicating over the summer. I talked to Mike Jolly and Barb Rupas - who are in charge of the Summer Sports Camps - about our lack of numbers for the first day of camp. I expressed my concerns with the price of the camp, relaying to them that we - the football team - only charge $30.00 for a very similar camp early in the summer. They expressed that they are more than willing to work with any of the families struggling with the cost of the camp. I, most certainly, am willing to work with all of you - no questions asked. It's times like these that we were very fortunate to have raised an outstanding amount of money during the Lift-A-Thon to help out our football family members in need. I simply need the players there; along with the parents expressing the importance of all the players being at this camp. We can sort all money issues out at the end of the week. It's important for us to make sure that all of our players are able to take advantage of every opportunity to make themselves a better teammate by being mentally and physically ready for the 2010 season. This camp is simply another advantage we have to ensure every person associated with Red Hawk Football the success they deserve. Have a great week. I'll look forward to hearing from you soon.

Troy Sports Camp

Parents and Players,

Just a Reminder that the Troy Sports Camp will be held this week - Monday, July 26th through Friday, July 30. We will continue our lifting regiment Monday through Thursday with groups 5-8 coming at 9:00 -10:30 am, and groups 1-4 coming at 10:00 - 11:30 am. The actual lifting sessions may finish earlier because we will not condition on Tuesday or Thursday during the Sports Camp week.

Players issued a helmet must wear those for the camp. The good news is our new order of helmets have arrived, but the bad news is they are the wrong color. You can sense how excited I am about that. We will have this problem fixed by registration on Thursday, August 5th.

Two more weeks before the official start of the 2010 Football Season. We are definitely turning the corner after our championship win at the Stoney Creek Passing tournament this past weekend. I'm very proud to see how much this team has developed in one short year. Let's keep this momentum heading in a championship direction.

Go Red Hawks!!

7 on 7 Reminders

Parents and Player,

Just a reminder about our 7-on-7 tournament at Stevenson this Saturday, July 17th. We will need to leave the Athens parking lot - football field side- by 7:45 am. I want to make sure we arrive with enough time to properly warm up and review a few offensive and defensive strategies before the 9:00 am start time.

The Dakota 7-on-7 which was held this evening - July 15th - has been re-scheduled for Tuesday, July 27th. We are scheduled to play at 6:00, but will need to leave the high school by 4:45 because of all the road work and high traffic volume.

Thanks,

Coach Heppner

Fan Gear Extension

Parents and Players,

I've spoken with the guys at 3 Blind Mice, and they have agreed to extend our Fan Gear deadline to Tuesday, July 13. I only have 27 families that have turned in order forms at this point. I haven't been receiving too much feedback regarding the Fan Gear from anyone either. Hopefully extending the deadline to the week after the 4th of July weekend will allow families more financial freedom to purchase a few of the items. Remember, these items are for family members and players. If you have already made a payment online through paypal, can you let me know as well. I've created a spreadsheet of all the items ordered for each specific family in order to distribute the items correctly upon delivery.

I hope everyone enjoys their 4th of July weekend. Please encourage these young men to do something associated with football during this week off as well. Knowing their responsibilities is 80% of the battle. If we can be 100% prepared mentally, than the physical aspect will take care of itself.

Pledge Total and Billing Statements

Parents,

The pledge total increases!!! We are now up to $11,795.85. I'd like to once again thank you for all of your support throughout this whole process. These young men have been doing a tremendous job this off-season and the Lift-A-Thon has proven to be another example of that.

The billing statements for the per-pound pledges have been distributed in the players files in the weight room. I'm waiting until tomorrow to put the returned pledge sheets with the copy of your spread sheet into the files until tomorrow - Thursday the 27th. We still have some pledges coming in, so I'd like to make sure that all of you're sponsors are appropriately recognized.

I'll be confirming a place, date, and time for our June meeting by this week. Expect an email soon regarding our summer kick-off meeting. Enjoy the Memorial Day Weekend.

Success!! Lift-A-Thon Update

Parents and Players!

What an exciting day. I would like to start off by saying one million thank you's to all the parents who supported our football program throughout the Lift-A-Thon process. Your presence, encouragement, hard work, and positivity truly made this and extraordinary event. With your dedication and help, we were able to raise $11,000.85!! I'm praying that this truly is a sign of the great things to come for our young men as we head into the 2010 season. I will keep you updated on the grand total as more pledges continue to come in over the next couple of weeks.

We have a little over $900.00 of outstanding Per-Pound pledges still out there. I will be giving your sons billing statements with the appropriate amount to be collected on Monday - May 24th. All of your pledge sheets, with a copy of your spreadsheet, will be stapled and placed in each players file in the weight room. Please remind your son's to bring the copy of those items home in order for the appropriate people to be thanked.

Once again, I can't thank you enough for all the time and effort all of you put in to making this event a tremendous success. Enjoy the rest of your week. I'll be seeing all of you very soon.

Lift-A-Thon Meeting and Workout Updates

Parents and Players,

We are re-scheduling our Lift-A-Thon meeting to Wednesday, April 28th at 7:00 pm in the high school gymnasium. It is extremely important that all of our football parents attend this meeting. We will be passing out all of the letters and important information regarding the Lift-A-Thon that you will need in order to help make this a great success for our program. There are a few other topics that I, and my mother's club would like to discuss as well.

Also, we will be starting our six week morning running sessions every Tuesday and Thursday, beginning Tuesday, April 25th and ending Thursday June, 3rd. Dedication week will start Monday, June 7th and end Friday, June 11th. Every morning session starts at 6:00 am sharp. It is important that all participants show up on time. Anyone participating in a spring sport is expected - but not required - to come on non-game days.

I can't begin to express my excitement and gratitude to all of the people - both players and parents - who have made this off-season one of the best I've ever been apart of. There is a serious feeling of greatness in the air. Not only for our football players, but also for every member of our football family as well. Our job is to never give up, while always believing in ourselves and each other.

Schedule Updates and Reminders

Parents,

We are fast approaching our May 22nd date for the 2nd annual Lift-A-Thon. We are asking that parents start gathering resources regarding donations for our silent auction during this event. Save the date for an important informative meeting regarding the Lift-A-Thon on Monday, May 3rd at 7:00 pm in either the high school cafeteria or auditorium. We'll be sending out an email regarding the exact location at a later date. That being said, we are trying to gather all of the email addresses for our football family members. If you read this blog, but have not received an email from me prompting you to check the blog, please email me at your earliest convenience.

It's hard to believe that our off-season training is almost half-way over and we are now beginning to prepare for spring. I am very proud of our core group of young men that have truly bought into this program and have dedicated many hours of their time to our rigorous weight training and conditioning schedule. We have many young men that are already accomplishing the goals they had set in our post-season meetings only a few months ago. Our philosophy is very simple - be happy with direction your taking yourself and this program - along with the accomplishments you are achieving - but never be satisfied.

Just a couple of updates. We have changed our work week to a Monday through Thursday training schedule. We have found that our workouts are not as affective if we have them on Friday, therefore we will only have our workouts Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Our alternating core, neck, speed and agility training will still begin at 2:45, followed by our workouts at 3:30. Each player has established the routine of an uptempo workout, which usually has them finishing their workout between 4:15 and 4:30. All players that are involved in a spring sport are highly encouraged to attend the core exercise training sessions, Monday and Wednesday mornings, at 6:30 am. It is extremely important that our players maintain their strength involving the core lifts associated with their training while they participate in their spring sport.

Most importantly, any student-athlete failing two classes at the end of the 2010 winter/spring semester, will be ineligible for the 2010 football season. Any player struggling in any of their classes needs to contact me immediately.

The 2010 football season is looking to be an extremely successful year, but their is still much to be done. Thank you again for your time and dedication. Go Red Hawks!

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year to all of the Red Hawk football family. I hope that everyone had a blessed and safe new year. It's that time again to start our off-season training in preparation for the 2010 season. We have recorded all of our testing results from our Phase 1 testing sessions. All of the results will be posted in the weight room. We have ranked all the the players by each position and grade level by their results from the testing. Each players will be listed in order of rank by how well they tested in all of the assessments.

It's imperative that we have all members committed to the off-season weight training and conditioning. All of us have set goals in terms of becoming the best of the best; now it's time to put our money where our mouth is. In order for us to take this program to the next level, we must have all members at all levels fully committed this year.

We will have 6:30 am training sessions starting Monday, January 4th for all of the athletes competing in winter and spring sports. We will be lifting Monday and Wednesday mornings at 6:30 am sharp every morning. Our goal is to maintain your strength through our core lifts while competing in your chosen winter and spring sports. These workouts will be quick, explosive and extremely intense in order to effectively increase your strength, speed, and agility.

Off-season workouts for players not participating in a winter or spring sport will start Monday, January 4th as well. We will begin our workouts at 2:45 in the axillary gym. We will begin with speed and agility training on Monday's and Friday's; neck and core training on Tuesday's and Thursday's before we start our weight training routine.

The foundation has been set. Everyone is well aware of the high expectations for everyone competing in this program from here-on-out. The only question to ask now is . . . "If the team was working as hard as you, how good will will be?"

Red Hawk Football = Championship Football. Let's make it a reality: Coach Heppner
